Spotlight on Dr. Claire Fantus, Head of Psychiatry

Meet Dr. Claire Fantus, Department Head of Psychiatry at Kootenay Boundary Regional Hospital (KBRH) & Medical Director of Mental Health and Substance Use (MHSU) for the Kootenay Boundary a driving force behind compassionate and comprehensive mental health care in our community.

Dr. Fantus has always been fascinated by the human experience—what shapes individuals, how they navigate adversity, and the ways they cultivate resilience. Her journey into psychiatry began with studies in anthropology, where she learned the importance of person-centred care. Furthering her commitment to understanding the human mind, Dr. Fantus pursued advanced training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy at the Toronto Institute of Psychoanalysis. This education has enriched her ability to empathize with patients, offering them the support they need to recover and thrive.

At The Daly Pavilion at KBRH, Dr. Fantus and her team are on the frontline of mental health care, helping patients through crises such as suicidal thoughts, psychosis, PTSD, post-partum depression, and complex grief. Their work extends beyond the hospital walls, supporting families, partners, and employers who are also impacted by mental health challenges.

Mental health affects everyone in our community, yet stigma often keeps it hidden. Dr. Fantus believes that by opening up conversations and increasing awareness, we can foster greater empathy and understanding.

Over the years, Dr. Fantus has observed a growing housing crisis in the region, which significantly affects mental health. Without a safe and stable place to live, individuals face increased stress, job loss, financial hardship, and worsening mental health conditions. Social factors like housing, employment, and financial security are key components of mental wellness, and addressing these broader issues is essential for community well-being.

For Dr. Fantus, the Mental Health Matters Campaign is not just about upgrading facilities—it’s about transforming the way mental health care is delivered.

She is particularly excited about the renovations to The Daly Pavilion, which will create a more therapeutic environment for patients. “The psychology of space plays a crucial role in healing,” she explains. Warm and inviting colours, comfortable beds, modern furniture, and enhanced safety features will provide patients with the security and stability they need to recover.

“Mental wellness impacts every aspect of our lives—physically, emotionally, and spiritually. When we feel secure in ourselves and in the world, we thrive. We can build stronger relationships, more creative workspaces, and more supportive communities. We are incredibly grateful for all donations and support for this campaign. Beyond financial contributions, simply raising awareness and talking about mental health can help reduce stigma and create a healthier community for everyone. Mental health matters!”

When she’s not working, you can find Dr. Fantus spending time with her two boys, skiing, writing poetry, or playing the fiddle—activities that bring her joy and balance in her own life.
