Spotlight On: Shelina McDowell, Nursing Unit Assistant at Daly Pavilion

For 17 years, Shelina McDowell has been an integral part of patient care at KBRH. As a Nursing Unit Assistant at the Daly Pavilion, she plays a crucial role in keeping the unit running smoothly, managing mental health forms for hospitals across the Kootenay Boundary region, and providing essential support to both staff and patients.

Her journey into mental health care began five years ago, transitioning from an Intensive Care Unit background. “It was definitely an eye-opener,” Shelina shares. “The defining moment for me was realizing that mental health does not discriminate—everyone, at some point in their lives, faces challenges with their mental well-being.”

Beyond administrative responsibilities, Shelina is often the reassuring voice on the other end of the phone—guiding worried families, assisting clients post-discharge, and ensuring patients feel supported. One moment that stands out for her was when an elderly gentleman, confused by a change in his appointment location, called in distress. “I walked him through it over the phone, met him at the door when he arrived, and made sure he felt comfortable. The gratitude in his voice reminded me how small acts of kindness can make a huge impact.”

Shelina is supportive of the Mental Health Matters Campaign and the changes it will bring. “For so long, mental health has been stigmatized. This campaign is finally shining a light on the importance of mental health care, and I hope it helps people understand that mental health should be treated just like any other medical condition.”

One of the improvements she’s most excited about is the modernization of the unit.

“Imagine coming in with a Major Depressive Disorder and being placed in an outdated, drab space—it doesn’t contribute to healing,” she explains. “A brighter, more welcoming environment could make all the difference in a patient’s recovery. Private spaces would also create a more comfortable and supportive healing environment.”

For Shelina, this campaign isn’t just about renovations—it’s about making sure mental health care is treated with the same urgency and importance as any other aspect of healthcare. “At some point, you or a loved one may need mental health support. Mental health doesn’t discriminate—it affects everyone, from lawyers to students to those experiencing homelessness. This campaign is about making sure we provide the same level of care you would expect for any other health issue.”

When she’s not at work, you’ll find Shelina hiking with her dog Odie, spending time with her three children, or exploring backcountry roads on her motorcycle, always chasing the next breathtaking sunset.
