Trail, BC –The KBRH Health Foundation is thrilled to announce the successful completion of the Orthopedic Enhancement Project, surpassing its initial $750,000 fundraising goal to reach an astounding $1.2 million. This achievement marks a significant milestone in transforming orthopedic care in the Kootenay Boundary region.

A pivotal factor in this success was the outstanding generosity of our community and the inspiring $250,000 matching donation from Jim Pattison. Thanks to the combined efforts of donors across the region and Jim Pattison’s match, $500,000 was raised during the Light-Up Hospitals! campaign to push this project over the finish line.

“The response from our community has been nothing short of remarkable,” said Lisa Pasin, KBRH Health Foundation Executive Director. “The incredible generosity shown by individuals, businesses, and organizations, coupled with the transformative support from Jim Pattison, ensures that KBRH’s Operating Rooms are equipped with cutting-edge tools that will have a lasting impact on patient care.”

With some of the new equipment already in place, orthopedic surgeons at KBRH are delivering groundbreaking results. To date, 80% of patients undergoing hip replacements with the new equipment, including the Hana Table, have been discharged the same day—a remarkable improvement in recovery times and patient outcomes.

The significant success of this project will enable the purchase of supplemental equipment, further advancing the orthopedic program beyond initial expectations. The enhanced fleet of tools and equipment include the Hana Table, multiple retractors, micro power drills, Pi drivers, and positioners, among others. These innovations will allow for improved patient positioning and stabilization, better visualization and access to the surgical field, and the ability to perform more surgical cases per day.

The $1.2 million raised will enhance orthopedic surgeries, support specialist recruitment, and enable new surgical procedures, including foot and ankle surgeries and advanced approaches to hip replacements. The less invasive hip techniques will reduce recovery time, helping patients return home and resume normal activities more quickly. This ensures that patients in the Kootenay Boundary region have access to advanced care close to home for years to come.

“This project is about more than just new equipment—it’s about transforming lives, creating accessible care and building a healthier future for our community,” added Lisa Pasin. “We are deeply grateful to everyone who contributed to making this vision a reality.”

The KBRH Health Foundation extends its heartfelt thanks to every donor who made this extraordinary achievement possible, as well as the orthopedic team, whose dedication and efforts have elevated patient care to new heights. To honour the incredible support of our donors, an Orthopedic Enhancement Project Donor Wall will be created to commemorate this outstanding accomplishment.

As we celebrate this collective success, the Foundation looks forward to advancing healthcare in the Kootenay Boundary region through our next campaign, which will launch in February 2025. Together, we are shaping the future of healthcare in our region.
